How to Buy Monero (XMR) in the US
Monero is the most widely used privacy coin in the world and one of the hardest to buy in the United States. Most regulated US exchanges have delisted XMR. This guide covers the verified methods that work in 2026.
The friction gap
Zcash (ZEC) and Monero (XMR) are both privacy coins, but the buying experience is completely different. You can buy ZEC on Kraken, Coinbase, or Gemini in minutes with a bank transfer. Buying XMR requires at least one extra step because the major US exchanges no longer carry it.
Binance removed all XMR spot pairs in February 2024. Coinbase never listed it. Kraken dropped XMR for US customers. Monero is legal to hold and use in every US state, but the on-ramp from dollars to XMR has narrowed.
That gap between "I want privacy" and "I actually hold a privacy coin" is what we call the friction gap. The five methods below are the bridges across it.
Five methods compared
| Method | Strength | KYC | Cost | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ★ ZEC-to-XMR Swap | Recommended Easiest | Partial | ~$15-35/1K | ~60 min |
| KuCoin | Fastest Most liquid | Full | ~0.1% | ~10 min |
| Haveno (P2P) | Most private No KYC | None | Varies | 1-4 hrs |
| Bisq (P2P) | Established No KYC | None | Varies | 1-4 hrs |
| Atomic Swaps | Most trustless Technical | None | BTC fees | 30-60 min |
For most US buyers, Method 1 (ZEC swap) is the practical default. It uses fully regulated exchanges for the fiat-to-crypto step, keeps costs reasonable, and provides better privacy separation than buying XMR on a KYC exchange directly.
#1 Buy ZEC, then swap to XMR
Buy Zcash on any regulated US exchange, then swap it for Monero on a non-custodial swap service. This is the simplest path for most US buyers and the one we recommend.
-
Buy ZEC on a US-licensed exchange
Use Kraken, Coinbase, or Gemini. Fund with a bank transfer or card. Use a limit order on the Pro/Advanced platform to avoid the instant-buy spread.
-
Withdraw ZEC to your own wallet
Send ZEC to a wallet you control. Zashi is the most popular ZEC mobile wallet. Any ZEC-compatible wallet works.
-
Swap ZEC for XMR
Go to ChangeNOW or SideShift. Select ZEC as input and XMR as output. Enter your Monero receiving address. Send ZEC to the address the service provides.
-
Receive XMR in your wallet
The swap service converts your ZEC and sends Monero to your wallet. Since January 2026, most swap services require 25 XMR confirmations (up from 10) due to heightened network activity after a $282M theft that was laundered through Monero. Expect the full process to take approximately one hour.
#2 KuCoin
KuCoin lists XMR and is one of the most liquid venues globally. However, KuCoin is permanently barred from serving US residents following its March 2026 CFTC consent order and earlier DOJ settlement. If you are a US resident, this method is not available to you. It is included here for international readers and for context on where XMR liquidity exists.
-
Create and verify a KuCoin account
Sign up at kucoin.com. KuCoin requires KYC verification for privacy coin withdrawals. US residents will be blocked during verification.
-
Deposit funds
Deposit USDT from another exchange, or buy crypto via KuCoin's third-party card provider.
-
Trade on XMR/USDT
Navigate to the XMR/USDT spot pair. Place a limit order at or near the current price.
-
Withdraw XMR to your wallet
Send to a wallet you control. Do not leave XMR on the exchange.
#3 Haveno (peer-to-peer)
Haveno is a decentralized exchange built specifically for Monero. It runs as desktop software on your computer. Trades happen directly between you and another person, with escrow built into the protocol. There is no central company holding your funds.
-
Download and install Haveno
Get the client from haveno.exchange. Available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
-
Fund your security deposit
Deposit XMR or BTC as collateral for the escrow system.
-
Browse or create an offer
Find someone selling XMR for your preferred payment method (bank transfer, Zelle, cash deposit). Or create your own offer and wait for a taker.
-
Complete the trade
Follow the payment instructions. The software manages the escrow and releases funds once both sides confirm.
#4 Bisq (peer-to-peer)
Bisq is an older and more established decentralized exchange. It supports XMR trading pairs alongside Bitcoin and other assets. Like Haveno, it runs as a desktop application with no central account.
Bisq has deeper history and a larger user base than Haveno, but it is Bitcoin-centric. XMR liquidity on Bisq is thinner than on Haveno. Trades require BTC for security deposits, which adds a step if you do not already hold Bitcoin.
#5 Atomic swaps (BTC to XMR)
Atomic swaps let you trade Bitcoin for Monero without trusting any intermediary. The swap is cryptographically trustless: either both sides complete or neither does. No exchange, no counterparty risk, no account.
You use swap software (such as the COMIT XMR-BTC swap tool) that coordinates the exchange using hash-time-locked contracts. You send BTC, the protocol locks it, and you receive XMR once both sides confirm.
#6 Coming soon: THORChain native swaps
THORChain is a decentralized cross-chain liquidity protocol that enables native asset swaps without wrapped tokens or centralized intermediaries. As of April 2026, simulation tests for Monero integration have passed and mainnet launch is targeted within 1-2 months. ZEC integration is on a parallel track for late April.
When live, THORChain will let you swap BTC, ETH, or other supported assets directly to XMR without any exchange account or KYC. This combines the liquidity depth of a centralized exchange with the privacy of an atomic swap. We will update this guide with a full walkthrough once the integration goes live.
Wallet recommendations
Once you have XMR, move it off the exchange or swap service and into a wallet you control. Do not leave XMR on an exchange longer than necessary. The entire point of Monero is self-custody.
| Wallet | Platform | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Cake Wallet | iOS, Android | Everyday mobile use. Also supports ZEC, BTC, and in-app swaps. |
| Monero GUI | Desktop | Full node option for maximum privacy. Requires 150GB+ disk space. |
| Feather Wallet | Desktop | Lightweight desktop wallet. Connects to remote nodes. |
Tax note
Buying, selling, and swapping cryptocurrency is a taxable event in the United States. The ZEC-to-XMR swap in Method 1 is two taxable events: the sale of ZEC and the acquisition of XMR. Keep records of your purchase price, swap price, and dates.
Starting in 2026, US-regulated exchanges issue Form 1099-DA for crypto transactions. Any ZEC purchase on Coinbase, Kraken, or Gemini is reported directly to the IRS. The swap to XMR on a non-custodial service is where the reporting trail from the regulated exchange ends, but you are still responsible for reporting the transaction on your tax return. Consult a tax professional for your specific situation. This guide is not tax advice.
